The key reason for working with SE need not necessarily be an obvious traumatic event but purely the presence of a symptom or symptoms, (see below for a list of symptoms of traumatic stress). Trauma is not in the event but in the individual’s physiological reaction to it; the latter being dictated by the individual’s perception of what has gone on.
Some people respond more positively than others to SE. But in these situations, SE might do the trick and help you feel a lot better.
Symptoms of traumatic stress:
- anxiety, phobias and panic attacks
- palpitations, shallow breathing and breathlessness
- involuntary tics, jerking or grimacing
- inexplicable reactions to everyday events
- being over alert, on guard or over excitable
- being attracted to dangerous situations, addictive behaviours such as smoking, alcohol dependency, drug abuse
- extreme sensitivity to light and/or sound
- insomnia, nightmares, night terrors
- abrupt mood swings, shame, lack of self-worth, depression
- mental blankness or feelings of being ‘spaced out’
- amnesia and forgetfulness
- exhaustion, chronic fatigue
- muscle weakness and pain
- psychosomatic illnesses, particularly some headaches, migraines, neck and back problems
- severe menstrual problems potentially affecting fertility
- digestive problems
- immune system problems and certain endocrine conditions
- skin disorders and environmental sensitivities
- avoidance behaviour, avoiding places, activities, movements, memories or people
- an inability to love, nurture or bond with – or commit to – others
